The carol was a tribute to the three worshipful kings, Melchior, Balthazar and Jasper who all saw the star prophesied as the birth of Christ at exactly the same hour, although each of them was far from the other (India, China, and Persia) and none knew of the others’ purpose. Each king prepared great and rich gifts (gold, frankincense, and myrrh) and set out on a journey they find the Christ child, using the star to guide them to Bethlehem.
